Gorilla trekking permit Booking Information for Bwindi, Uganda and Rwanda


Advance gorilla trekking permit booking is essential if you are interested in tracking gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. A gorilla permit for Bwindi, Mgahinga in Uganda should be booked for at least 10 to 5 months before the actual date of your trekking. Gorilla permits are legal documents that allow visitors to trek and see habituated gorillas in their natural habitat for one hour per day.

Gorilla trekking permits can be booked directly from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in Uganda and Rwanda Tourism Board (RTB) in Rwanda or through a trusted tour company that books on your behalf in both countries.

Booking gorilla trekking permits is subject to availability and they can be booked up to two years in advance. Mountain gorillas are found in three Africa countries, these are Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. The mountain gorillas are endangered therefore in order to protect them from extinction, different governments have restricted the frequency of visits to see the gorillas, only 8 people are allowed to visit a particular gorilla family per day and allowed only one hour with them. Contact the UWA reservations office through an email or phone call inquiring of the availability of the permits on your desired date, month and year plus the location where you want to track.

If the said dates or location are already reserved, you will be advised on the possible dates and location with availability in which you can choose the most convenient for you.

Once you have got a date and location, you will pay directly to UWA accounts together with the charges and send a scanned proof of payment to UWA

Once received it will take 2-4 days to process your gorilla permit and you will receive a scanned copy of your permit containing your name, passport number, home country, gorilla tracking date and location of tracking. You will then remain with presenting yourself for tracking on the gorilla tracking day in the specific location given.

When Booking a Gorilla permit through a Trusted Tour Company

No extra charges when booking a gorilla tour with a tour company that will at the some time handle transfers, guidance and accommodation. Given that these tour companies are on ground they have enough knowledge about the different locations and so will make good choices for you to meet your tastes and preferences for example they choose a location to match your accommodation. If you only book a gorilla permit and do self drive, a small fee will be charged to cover some costs that the tour agency will incur while trying to get in touch with Uganda wildlife Authority on your behalf.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in two national parks Mgahinga national park and Bwindi Impenetrable national park but all permits have to be booked from the Uganda wildlife authority offices in Kampala and no booking is done on arrival at the park offices.

Bwindi Impenetrable national park also allows visitors to participate in gorilla habituation process which lasts up to four hours with gorillas on each day visit and the permits are also booked like the gorilla trekking permits.

Gorilla Permits Cost Differently in Different Countries

In Rwanda  Gorilla permit cost USD 1500,

In Uganda foreign non-residents pay USD 700.

Foreign residents in East Africa pay USD 600 trekking gorillas in Uganda and east African residents pay 250,000 Uganda shillings to visit gorillas.

A Uganda Gorilla habituation permits cost USD 1500.

DR Congo a gorilla permit cost USD 400

  • For Foreign Residents in Rwanda gorilla permit from USD 1500 to $500.

  • Uganda foreign non-residents permit reduced from $700 to USD 400.
