  1. Rwenzori Mountains (Mountains of the moon)

Rwenzori is located at the border of Uganda and Congo and this is the third highest mountain in Africa with its highest peak Margherita at 5109m above sea level. Rwenzori Mountains, also known as mountains of the moon are snowcapped throughout the year and hiking up these mountains is so rewarding with so much flora and fauna to see and also the amazing views of the surrounding area. Rwenzori Mountains are one of the UNESCO world Heritage Sites in Uganda. Hiking up the Rwenzori Mountains takes one to eight days or even more depending on one’s ability to hike and speed. There are many trails for hiking to the highest peak and these include the central circuit which is the longest taking up to 8 days, the mahoma trail, kilembe trail and so many more.

  1. Mount Elgon & Sipi Falls

Mt Elgon is another beautiful hiking adventure in Uganda. Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano with crater lakes and it has the largest caldera. It lies at the border of Uganda and Kenya. Mount Elgon has its peak Wagagai in Uganda. Many trails can be taken up to this highest peak for example the sasa trail, the original route to Wagagai taking up to 4 days to do the round trip and piswa trail the best trail for watching wildlife, piswa trail takes 6-7 days and sipi trail that begins in Kapkwai and gives a chance to chill out at Sipi falls and this trail takes 4-7days. Mount Elgon is less crowded and it has spectacular views of the waterfalls, caves, hot springs and wildlife.

  1. Virunga Mountains (Mgahinga Gorilla National Park)

The Virunga mountains are located in south western Uganda also give excellent hikes. These are located on the boarder of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. They have beautiful flora and fauna and amazing views across all the countries. The Virunga Mountains are composed of Mount Mgahinga at 3474 m, Mount Sabinyo at 3660 m and Mount Muhabura at 4127 m. Hiking any of these three Mountains take 6 hours to a full day. The Virunga Mountains harbor unique wildlife such as Mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, chimpanzees and a lot of birdlife.
