It has a lush mosaic of Afro-montane forest, grassland and moorland habitats making this park a highly rewarding Uganda Tour Destination for hikers and other natural history. Mount Egon was one of Uganda’s oldest physical features, first erupting around 24 million years ago. It was once Africa’s highest mountain, far exceeding Mount Kilimanjaro’s current 5895 m, but erosion have reduced its height to 4321 m hence being the 4th highest peak in East Africa and 8th on the whole Africa continent.
Mount Elgon Hiking safari will lead you to a home to two tribes the Bagisu and the Sabiny. The bagisu are known to be the ‘Ba Masaba’, consider Mount Elgon to be the embodiment of their founding father Masaba and refer to the mountain by this name. The mountain is also a home to 300 species of birds, including the endangered Lemmergeyer.
The ultimate goal on reaching the top of Mt Elgon is not the final ascent into the vast 40 square kilometers caldera. Mount Elgon Hike Safari to the top is an experience of timeline and reminder of how colorful the landscape in Uganda is. The mountain has excellent birding opportunities around Kapkwai forest Exploration centre, particularly in secondary forest and in thick shrub along the loop trail to Cheptui falls. Birders have chance to see birds like Cisticla’s, White-chinned prinia, African Blue frycatcher, African Gashawk among others.
